Sweden to Release New krona Banknotes & Coins in 2016

20 Oct 2015

The new 100 and 500 krona Swedish banknotes will arrive in the Autumn of 2016, together with 1, 2 and 5 krona coins.  This release will happen exactly one year after the new 20, 50, 200 and 1000 krona notes were introduced in October 2015.

The new currency was designed to improve the security features of the currency, in an effort to prevent counterfeits. The current series was designed 25 years ago and was in need of an update, according to Swedish authorities.

From 1 October 2015, it will be possible to pay with the new 20-, 50- 200- and 1,000-krona banknotes. The present 20-, 50- and 1,000-krona banknotes will become invalid after 30 June 2016.

To validate these new notes and coins, all coin validators and note acceptors must be upgraded so that they will securely accept the new currency.
